FAQ

What can a handyman do to install new fixtures and appliances?

These projects are best left to the professionals. Before you start installing any appliance or fixture, make sure you have the right information.

Which is easier, contracting or being handyman?

Handyman work requires less resources than contracting because you only need your own tools. However, you must be able to manage your own workload and schedule, while contractors typically rely on subcontractors to do most of the work.

How often should I hire a handyman?

It depends on the nature and scope of your project. You might only need one handyman per work week if your job is a simple fix-it, such as changing a light bulb. If there are many remodeling tasks involved, however, you might need several handymen.

How to Replace a Broken Window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean the new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Let the caulking dry overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
