How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Let the caulking dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
