How To

How to replace a broken window

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. This repair will take only 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
