How to replace a broken window

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
