How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Next step: Clean the glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
